Social Program

FoodMicro 2024 has organized a Summer Camp for Kids and Teens. This will be held from July 8th through July 11th at “La Estación de la Ciencia y la Tecnología (Science and Technology Station)” which is the building of the former railway station of Burgos. This location is a 16-minute walk from the congress venue “Forum Evolución Burgos”.

“La Estación” is a project that is being developed by the University of Burgos and the City Council with the objective of promoting Science and Technological Culture to all citizens. Children and young people can enjoy participating in different workshops. In “La Estación” there are several areas such as:

  • Maker Space: with various technological tools such as 3D printers that can encourage the creativity of kids and teens.
  • ScienceLab: a lab that puts into practice several science experiments
  • Pequeciencia: this is as scientific and technological space dedicated to little ones with ages between 3 and 6 where they can play with robots and start their first contact with science.
  • Biospace: it’s a small indoor garden where plants and biodiversity are the main topics.
  • RobotLab: a space dedicated to build, program and test robots.
  • GameLab: an area where kids and teens can create their own video games.

During three and a half days, while you attend the congress, your children will be able to enjoy a Scientific and Technological Experience at “La Estación”.

Activities

Did you know that Burgos contains 3 properties that have been declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Site? The Cathedral of Burgos and its Old Town, the Camino de Santiago and the Atapuerca Archaeological site. We will discover in Burgos a unique territory thanks to its richness in arts, culture and gastronomy.

On the private guided tour of Burgos we will discover an ancient legacy of anonymous people or illustrious characters such as El Cid Campeador. From the always essential visit to the Cathedral of Burgos, to a walk through our origins in the Museum of Human Evolution.

We can't miss walking through the historic center of Burgos, without a doubt, the best way to feel the city. The historic center of Burgos is living testimony of a past full of stories, legends and illustrious characters. Feel in its streets and monuments the essence and splendor of the considered Head of Castile. The Arco de Santa María, the Casa del Cordón, the Plaza Mayor or the Gothic churches of San Gil, San Esteban and San Nicolás de Bari are mandatory stops if you come to visit Burgos.

A little history of Burgos to start feeling it.

Recent research points to a possible Roman origin of the city of Burgos. Although, for the time being, it is still considered to have been founded in 884. Its founder would be Count Diego Rodríguez, better known as Diego Porcelos.

The city began its expansion in the shadow of the castle, between the hill of San Miguel and the course of the Arlanzón River. Its strategic location, a must for pilgrims on their way to Santiago, and the intense commercial activity soon turned it into a prosperous urban center. It will soon become the capital of the Kingdom of Castile, the Caput Castellae or Head of Castile, as our shield says.

The growing importance of Burgos led to the demolition of the primitive Romanesque cathedral and its replacement in 1221 by the current Gothic cathedral.

Economically, Burgos experiences its golden age in the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. The wool trade with Flanders is of key importance in this moment of splendor. The economic strength will correspond to extensive artistic and cultural activity. It is at this moment when large palaces are erected, and deep works are undertaken in the Cathedral.

After a long period of lethargy, the final years of the 18th century and the next century represent a new rebirth. It was the century of modernization for Burgos. A modernization that will culminate in the 60s of the twentieth century. That decade is key to the profound industrial transformation of Burgos that remains to this day.

This importance of Burgos in the past has allowed us to have a great historical-artistic heritage, which you can discover during this visit.

The Sierra de Atapuerca sites are 15 km east of Burgos city. They gained scientific and social prominence in 1992, when ancient fossils were unearthed in Sima de los Huesos, and then again two years later with the discovery of 900,000 year-old human remains which defined a new species, Homo antecessor. In 2000, the sites were declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Discover the unique answer to the enigma of our origins with this tour. This tour includes a guided visit to Sierra de Atapuerca Sites and visit to Experimental Archaeology Centre (CAREX).

Visitors enter the sites along the Railway Cutting, an artificial passageway dug into the limestone Sierra in the early 20th century. The Cutting exposed a huge trove of archaeo-palaeontological remains which defined three of Atapuerca's most important sites, now open to visitors: Sima del Elefante, Galería and Gran Dolina. During the annual digs in June and July, the tour follows the Lookout Trail, which runs parallel to the top of the railway cutting.

CAREX is in the village of Atapuerca. This outreach facility, run by the Government of Castilla and León, focuses on experimental archaeology, a discipline that generates accurate knowledge about the way tools, huts, cloth, pottery and works of art were made and used in the past.

The centre has two complementary areas, one indoors and the other in the open air. The outdoor zone is designed to take visitors on a chronological tour to familiarise them with the evolution of technological innovations in the course of human history. The indoor zone is Spain's first permanent exhibition on experimental archaeology. Its thematic thread follows the major research areas of Experimental Archaeology:
1) stone knapping,
2) toolmaking over time,
3) the use of tools,
4) the production of fire, 5, 6 and
7) evolution of shelter through prehistory,
8) pottery
9) weaving and basket making, and
10) art and musical instruments.
Along the way, visitors can see and touch many replicas of archaeological material produced with the same techniques that were employed in each period, and even use some of them. In the process, they become experimenters using techniques from the past and learn some of our research processes.

CAREX is part of the international experimental archaeology network EXARC (archaeological open air museums, experimental archaeology, ancient technology and interpretation).

Please bear in mind that these sites are in a natural setting, with the corresponding hindrances to movement.

Living Paleo. Study and Conservation of threatened species

Paleolítico vivo is a private initiative directed by a team of biologists, naturalists and scientists whose main objective is the promotion and conservation of nature, threatened species and their balance with man, within the defense and study of ecosystems. Likewise, it analyzes the relationship between man, his past, present and future activities and the natural environment in which they operate and which they affect.

In Paleolítico vivo you will have the opportunity to live an experience conceived as a Total Immersion in Prehistory, in the contemplation of the landscapes and their fauna, entering into the daily life of the inhabitants of Prehistory, carrying out their activities and learning their techniques of hunting and ways of life.

The reserve is linked to a project to reintroduce bison and horses in danger of extinction in the area of Atapuerca (Burgos). It allows the visitor to see and learn what some of the animals that lived in Europe 10,000 years ago were like in an environment with extraordinary natural wealth. It also makes it possible to get closer to Prehistory, not only through its fossils or replicas, but also directly through the protagonists of those Upper Paleolithic ecosystems.

On a 4x4 safari, 10,000 years later, you can observe the species that shared territory with our ancestors.
